A major crisis erupted in Romania when premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu (leader of the Liberal Party) sacked his main coalition partners (the Democratic Party) and the non-party ministers whose reforms had secured the admission of Romania into the EU, while parliament voted to suspend and impeach President Traian Basescu (leader of the Democratic Party), accusing him of having repeatedly violated the Constitution. These shenanigans aroused fears that Romania was back-tracking on its reforms and would incur punitive sanctions.
