The ﬁrst period began at the end of the thirteenth or beginning of the fourteenth century and continued until the sixteenth century. Sculpture of this period hews relatively closely to nature. The second period, beginning the end of the sixteenth century and lasting about one hundred ﬁfty years, is characterized by a greater conventionality of style, as well as more massive casting (thickening of walls) and the appearance of engraved heads.
